Instagram is the hot topic for Q1 of 2015. It now has over 300 million monthly active users, of which 75 million are active daily. Here are 3 reasons to invest in an Instagram marketing strategy for your brand.
1. Your primary target audience are consumers under the age of 35
The first thing to remember here is that Instagram is not for every business. The audience is very much consumer focused with an estimated 41% of Instagram users between the ages of 16-24 & 76% under the age of 35. If your target audience are top level engineers in the aeronautics industry, chances are your Instagram campaign will have very little effect. Take a look at your target audience. Who is your ideal customer? If you are appealing to Millennials (people born between 1980 and 2000) then it’s time to shift focus away from Facebook, much like your target audience are doing, and move your efforts on to the newer platforms (Instagram, Snapchat, Vine etc).
2. Your business sells beautiful products
Instagram is a visually stimulating social media network. If you have a product that looks great then there is currently no better platform to show it off. From cupcakes to jewellery, brands are using the power of the picture to sell their product. Using the built in filters on your camera phone you can create some excellent native images that people will love (avoid studio shots!).
If your product is not so visually stimulating (e.g. contents insurance for students) then you will need to get a little more adventurous, think about the kind of lifestyle your service provides and replicate it with imagery.
3. You want up to 50x more engagement for your content
That’s right, research has revealed that at the top end brands are receiving 50x more organic engagement on Instagram than on Twitter. So for little more effort than sending a tweet (which should have images attached anyway) you will see a far more satisfying ROI. The key here is hashtags, and recent studies revealed that unlike Twitter, the more hashtags the better. I would still recommend showing some restraint here and at PRD we try to focus on between 7 and 12, which gets us plenty of engagement. Also to note: Don’t just post any old hashtag just because it’s popular, make sure it is relevant to the picture!
